THE POLYTECHNIC LIBRARY

The POLYTECHNIC main library is located at the ICT Centre. It has a total floor area of 720 square meters with a capacity to accommodate 1,000 volumes of books and seat about 200 readers. The Library also subscribes to about 1,000 journals and it provides local newspapers and magazines for its readers. All student should note that pilfering or mutilation of books will earn severe disciplinary measures.

The Library is open to readers on daily basis except on Sundays as follows:

8.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday

8.00am-1.00pm On Saturdays;

and 9.00am- 3.00pm During Vacations, Monday to Friday

ADMISSION TO THE LIBRARY

No person may make use of the POLYTECHNIC Library until he has signed and register undertaking to observe the library rules and regulation and has been issued with a library card. The card must be shown to any authorized official of the library on demand who may prohibit entry to any reader unable to produce it.

The following are eligible to be registered as readers in the library with the privilege of borrowing books and reference materials.

Members of the POLYTECHNIC Council

Members of Academic Staff

Senior members of Administrative and Technical Staff

�Post graduate students

The following may also use the library on a temporary basis and/or for reference purpose only.

Full Time Students

Part Time Students

Alumni of the Polytechnic

� Visitor attending conferences, seminars, or part time courses in the POLYTECHNIC

Such other persons as may be permitted by the POLYTECHNIC Librarian

LOAN OF BOOKS

i. Every book to be loaned out of the library must be submitted at the issuing desk (circulation desk) for necessary condition until the loan slips. The books shall be stamped with date due.

ii. The reader is responsible for any book for which the Library holds a loan slip signed by him and safe return in good condition until the loan slip is cancelled

iii. All transactions must be made in person

iv. No reader is normally allowed to borrow or have in his possession more than four books at a time

v. The period of loan shall be for two weeks, subject to renewal for another two weeks on application, provided the book is not required by others. For academic staff and post-graduate students, the initial loan period may be much longer provided it does not extend beyond the end of the academic year.

vi. Loaned books not returned by the date due will incur a fine of N50.00 per day and the reader will be denied borrowing privileges until the overdue book is returned to the library

vii. The following cannot be borrowed or removed from the library

RESERVE BOOK COLLECTION

There is Reserve Book Collection in the library. Such books which must be read in the library, may be retained for as long as 2 hours in the first instance. The period could be extended if there is no demand for such books. Books may be asked for by stating the author, title and (or) class mark at the circulation desk. In special cases, reserved books may be borrowed overnight to be returned by 8.30 a.m. the following day, or over the weekend (from Saturday) to be returned 8.30 a.m. the following Monday on the approval of the POLYTECHNIC Librarian.

RECALL

i. Library materials on loan from the open shelves/reserved shelves to any reader may be recalled before the expiration of the loan period. When such situations arise, such materials must be returned immediately failure will lead to a fine of N5.00 perday for the book

ii. Failure to return recalled library materials will result in a fine of N5.00 per day up to a maximum of N50.00 after which the borrower loses his library privileges.

RETURN OF LIBRARY MATERIALS

i. Library materials must be returned on or before the due date

ii. Library materials borrowed by students must be returned on or before the Wednesday preceding the end of each semester

iii. Library materials borrowed by members of staff must be returned before they proceed on annual leave, study leave, sabbatical leave, retirement, leave of absence, or any such long absence from the POLYTECHNIC

iv. Library materials borrowed by a member of staff must be returned on his/her resignation or termination of appointment v. Library materials borrowed must be returned to the library at the end of the session.

LOST MATERIALS

i. The published price of lost materials will be determined from appropriate sources. If a replacement price cannot be determined, a minimum charge of N50.00 per page will be demanded

ii. In addition N2,000.00 will be charged as ordering/processing fee on all lost materials

iii. Failure to do so is punishable by a fine of N50.00 per day for the materials. In addition, the reader may be disallowed from borrowing books from the library

iv. When lost materials have been paid for, the overdue fines will be dropped v. If a borrower locates an item after these charges have been paid the borrower may keep the item.

REFERENCES SERVICES

Readers in need of any document not in the Library are advised to apply to the Reference Librarian on a prescribed form. It is advisable to discuss with the Reference Librarian about your needs. Besides procuring materials from other institutions locally, the library has acquired the necessary coupons to procure overseas photocopying services for a fee.

LIBRARY DISCIPLINE

i. All readers must enter and leave the library by the Main Entrance. All other exits will remain locked except during emergency

ii. Silence must be maintained in and around the library

iii. Briefcases, umbrellas, sticks, raincoats, bags etc must be left in the cloakroom located at the library entrance

iv. No book may be marked, defaced or damaged in anyway (readers are held responsible for any injury to any book in their care, and must pay for loss or damages).

v. All readers (no exceptions) shall be subject to screening by the authorised official at the exit point

vi. Smoking and eating (of any kind) are strictly forbidden in all areas of the library

vii. The use of any form of naked light including candle

viii. Readers must at all times obey the reasonable request of any Library Official

ix. Any person removing a book from the library without duly signing for it, failing to return a book when required to do so after due notice or willfully damaging library property, may be barred from the library and appropriate reports made to the POLYTECHNIC authority

x. Any person caught taking out library materials without being charged out or without the permission of the POLYTECHNIC Librarian is liable to severe disciplinary measures including dismissal from the POLYTECHNIC

xi. The POLYTECHNIC Librarian is empowered to suspend or withdraw all reading privileges from persons who contravene these regulations and may report offences to the appropriate authority
